What happens in a lesson

  1. 01

    Step 1: A warm-up

Scales, a few chords or a favorite passage, to wake up the hands.

  2. 02

    Step 2: New material

Your teacher shows you a new idea, and you try it at the piano together.

  3. 03

Step 3: A plan for the week

You leave knowing what to practice, in what order, and what to listen for.

Before you buy or rent a piano or keyboard

  • Ask your teacher first

A piano or a keyboard at home helps a great deal, but ask your teacher before you buy or rent anything.

  • What to look for

Keys that feel like a piano's, and enough of them for the pieces you are learning. Your teacher will say what fits.

  • Keep it in tune

A piano needs tuning every year. Your teacher can tell you when yours sounds off.

Not sure which lessons?

A placement visit helps a teacher hear where you are and what you hope to play.
