Questions we hear most

What age can my child start?

Most children start around six, once they can sit comfortably for a short lesson. Younger children sometimes begin in the Saturday group class. Ask at the placement visit.

How long is a lesson?

Thirty, forty-five or sixty minutes, once a week. Beginners usually start with thirty. Your teacher suggests a length at the placement visit.

Do I need my own piano?

A piano or a keyboard at home helps a great deal, but ask your teacher before you buy or rent anything. We can tell you what to look for.

Can an adult start?

Yes. Adults are at Cadenza every week, from first-time beginners to church musicians who want to play along with a choir.

What is a placement visit?

A short visit where a teacher listens to you play, or to what you hope to play, and talks with you and your family. No preparation is needed, and a parent is welcome to stay.

Can lessons be in Spanish?

Yes. Ilda, Edwardo and Anays teach in English and Spanish, and a lesson can be in either language, or both. Percival teaches in English.

Do students have to play in recitals?

No. Recitals are by choice, and a teacher helps you pick a piece you want to play.

Can you help with a piece for a quinceañera?

Yes. A student and a teacher choose one piece together and build the weekly lessons around it. Tell us at the placement visit when the celebration is, and your teacher will plan the weeks with you.

How does tuition work?

It depends on the length of the lesson, whether it is private or in a group, and the teacher. We give you the figures in writing at the placement visit.

What happens when a lesson is missed?

Tell us a day ahead and your teacher offers a make-up time when there is one. A lesson the teacher cancels is made up. Group classes are not made up.
